Member of the Month, Erin Hodson

Meet Erin Hodson, November’s member of the month for the BCITMA! Erin Hodson is the First-Year Director of Marketing Communications and Schmoozapalooza for the BCITMA! Erin is always going above and beyond in her roles, she stays committed to her studies while exceeding expectations during every task that is given to her for the BCITMA. If you haven’t had the chance to meet Erin, I encourage you to do so!

I had the opportunity to interview Erin about her life, schooling and future plans; here is what she had to say!

What inspired you to be a part of the BCITMA?

“ I was never a part of any clubs or teams in highschool and wanted to change that in my post-secondary experience.  Being a first-year director allows me to get more involved in the BCIT and looks great on a resume.”

What are your duties as the First-Year Communications Director?

“My duties vary, I send emails out with announcements or events that are happening, I write captions for the Schmoozapalooza socials and sometimes make creatives for the Schmooze socials as well. I have also done a few interviews for the member of the month spotlights!”

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

“After graduating from the Communications program I plan to take a few years off of school to gain experience in the marketing industry. I want to get my BBA in a few years but do that part-time so I am able to work. Also, travel to either Europe or Australia!”

What would be your dream job?

“I would love to work for a tech company, like Google or Microsoft in a promotional position. I enjoy creating promotional content for social media or ads so a role that includes that would be a dream of mine.”

If not marketing, what would be another career path that would interest you?

“My mom inspired me to have an eye for interior design, so my second choice would’ve been the interior design program at BCIT. Interior design has always been a passion of mine, and I love switching up my room and finding new pieces to add!”

What has been your favourite experience at BCIT so far?

“Being from Comox, and living on campus has been a hard change for me. Being able to make friends here has been so rewarding and they have become my Vancouver family. The best experience so far has just been the relationships I have made with people and the friends I have now.”

How do you balance MA tasks and schoolwork?

“Our second-year directors always tell us that schoolwork HAS to come before any MA task. That mindset is super hard for me because MA tasks are so much for interesting than homework. I always get both done, but it is usually MA work before schoolwork.”

What do you do to wind down?

“I don’t normally get stressed because the more work I have the more motivated I am to get it done. If I want to wind down and de-stress I try to get off rez and go into the city to do something. Being around friends helps and ton, and being able to go home on holidays helps so much as well.”

What has been your favourite subject so far?

“Definitely the Intro to Marketing class, the projects and content were very interesting for me and directly relate to the career path  I have chosen.”

When coming to BCIT what was the biggest thing you had to adapt to?

“I’ve never lived on my own, so getting used to that has been the biggest thing for me. Also, managing studying, grocery shopping and cooking has been something I have needed to adapt to. I think having this experience so young has really helped me mature and for the future.”
