Meet Tyler Jiang

February 2023 Edition

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Name: Tyler Jiang (He/Him)
BCITMA Position: VP of Case Lead 22/23 & VP of Finance

Why did you join the BCITMA?
"I joined the BCITMA to gain leadership experience. I wanted to apply what I was learning in class by challenging myself to develop systems and processes to successfully deliver on a large-scale project with a big team of people. In addition, I hoped to gain an understanding of how to build a team culture that is conducive to hard work, ethical behaviour, and fun.”

What does your role look like as a VP of your committee?
”My role has a large breadth of responsibilities, most of which fall under the managerial functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. As such, my tasks vary quite a bit, however, on the day-to-day, I'm always brainstorming, researching, writing, and communicating.”

Do you have any experiences you would like to share from your time as a VP?
One highlight of my experience so far was the night we submitted one of our largest deliverables. Given that this is my first time recruiting and leading a team at this scale, it was so gratifying to see the team come together and work so hard to make our goals happen.”

How do you keep your personal and work/school life balanced?
Although it’s very challenging, I try my best to keep to a work schedule and communicate my time boundaries to my peers. That way, I force myself to be more purposeful with my time and make space for my personal needs.”

Can you share what you’ve learned so far with BCITMA?
”Other than my previously mentioned learning outcomes, my experience with the BCITMA has taught me the value of proactive contingency planning. Life happens, and things don't always go to plan, so as a leader, it is wise to actively seek when and where "fires" will happen and plan to put them out before they start.”

Any tips or tricks you would like to share with Marketing students?
Take full advantage of being a student. You'll find that many professionals can relate to the struggles of going to school. So reach out to people who inspire you and seek opportunities to learn from them.”
