VP Spotlight: Eileen Bui

Our October’s VP Spotlight is on Eileen Bui, VP of Membership. Eileen was the driving force behind this years' Marketing Week, a 4 day event attended by more than 50 guests.

What inspired you to be a part of the BCITMA?

“I was very adamant about not joining clubs while I was at SFU and coming to BCIT I had the same mind set. However, I made friends within my set and program, and a lot of those friends were joining the BCITMA so it peaked interest for me. I then saw the benefits of joining the MA and the experience I would get from becoming a member. My Diploma is only 2 years and I want to make the most of it!”

What are your duties as the Second-Year VP of Membership?

“I would say the duties range from a number of things. September was a big month that focused heavily on recruitment. Planning and organizing marketing week was another large task that involved reaching out to alumni and creating the full schedule. I also track all Member’s activity and ensure that they are being active within the community and a part of the committees that they would like to be in. In addition to Membership duties, I have chosen to give some of my time to help with the digital team and the website.”

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

“In 5 years, I will be 27 and I hope that I’ll be able to say I’m truly happy. I’m not entirely sure where career will take me, but I hope I’ll be happy with what I’m doing and surrounded by great people.”

What would be your dream job?

“I have worked in corporate communities in the past and I would love to end up working in e-commerce marketing or something with web-site design. I enjoy the more client side of marketing as it gives a more of a community feel. I would also love to learn more in the field of UX/UI design.”

What is your Number 1 Bucket list destination?

“I want to go to Greece. I missed out on the opportunity to go last year, so it is definitely close to the top of my list.”

How are you adjusting to a virtual class setting, do you notice any zoom fatigue?

“I think I’m adjusting pretty well to the online environment. Even though I get tired throughout the day, I feel that I have my classes under control. Being a part of the Marketing Association as well as the Student Association, definitely adds to my schedule, but I enjoy feeling busy, it gives my life more purpose.”

What has been your favourite experience with the BCITMA so far?

“I did really enjoy planning Marketing Week even with the added stress. I’m happy I was able to pull off an amazing event and receive such positive feedback! Being able to connect with great companies was a definite highlight. I even had the opportunity to connect with someone who lives in California and invite them to be a part of one of the events. I felt like this year’s Marketing Week was something that I could call my own and truly be proud of.”

How do you manage a school-life balance when your home has become your classroom?

“It actually only came to my attention this year, but Erin Whittle once said, “There is no such thing as a work-life balance” and I truly believe in that. I believe that if I like the work that I’m doing, then there is no need for a work-life balance. Everything I’m learning is interesting to me and I know I will be able to apply everything into my future career. In addition to classes itself, I work 3 days a week, I’m in both the Marketing and Student Association, and I am also mentoring a set. All of these things give me purpose and I don’t feel a need to separate any of them from my life to create more of a balance.”

What has been your favourite subject so far?

“I really like Public Relations with Geoffrey. I’m not sure if I want a career in Public Relations, but I like the influencer marketing and crisis communication aspects of it. We also have guest speakers, who are out in the industry, brought in to provide insightful information. Geoffrey also makes this class really fun!”

What do you hope to have achieved within the BCITMA for you last year?

“Honestly, I hope that we are able to continue our legacy as the largest Marketing Club on campus. I hope that the Marketing Association name will carry on despite everything happening with COVID.”

What is the biggest life lesson you have learnt throughout this unprecedented year?

“I’ve learnt that I just need to go with the flow. There is nothing we can do about online school and you just have to go with it. I think we can take advantage of this time, not only do we have to adapt to these new situations, but industry professionals are in the same position as well.”

What class have you found to provide the most valuable information?

“I definitely have learnt the most from our Marketing 2202, Intro to Marketing Communications class. We learnt important terms and were given the opportunity to be creative with the company we were writing about. I would also say that I really like how Danielle has adapted to online school with our Marketing 3317 class. Since everything is done virtually, adding breakout rooms have been a great way to interact with our teams and feel like nothing has changed.”
