INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Name: Kim Nguyen
BCITMA Position: President of BCITMA

Why did you join the BCITMA?
"I wanted to join the BCITMA because I wanted to be part of a club with like-minded individuals working towards a common goal. I also wanted to gain hands-on experience through BCITMA's consulting committee, and marketing skills through the MA's workshops and events.”

What does your role look like as a President of BCITMA?
”As someone who prefers to lead from behind, I provide support, knowledge, and advice to members and resolve any conflicts when they arise. I work closely with committees and check in with them to keep them accountable, work on the chapter plan and annual report, and help committees plan events, networking opportunities, industry tours, and workshops. I put in a lot of effort this year to build relationships with multiple companies and marketing organizations such as ABCOM or NABS to allow students to draw knowledge and experience from industry professionals.

Above all, I like to think I help enable students and help them to achieve their goals.”

Do you have any experiences you would like to share from your time as President?
Winning top 5 Chapter of the year! It was an incredible moment and it truly showed all the hard work was worth it.

How do you keep your personal and work/school life balanced?
Time management and having a great support network. I would never have been able to make it this far without such a passionate and hardworking team!

Personally, I like to block off some time on Sunday and plan out 1-2 weeks in advance and figure out what I want to get done every day. It's really not for everyone but I do believe I work more efficiently this way.

I would also recommend trying to find time for the things that make you happy. For myself, doing volunteer work and making a positive difference brings joy in my life so I try to make time for it. I also really value time with my loved ones, but with my schedule, it's difficult to find time to spend with them, so it's something I'm working to improve.”

Can you share what you’ve learned so far with BCITMA?
”I've been part of the MA for three years now, and every single year there are different goals and obstacles so it always feels like I'm learning something new!

As President, I learned how to work cooperatively in teams, and how important it is to lead while also inspiring and helping other students grow. I've taken a very hands-on approach, and as a leader that leads from behind, it's very satisfying being able to see the rest of my team slowly gain confidence and grow into capable leaders. There were a lot of positive changes to the MA this year and I cannot be more proud to be part of this legacy.”

Any tips or tricks you would like to share with Marketing students?
Is there a limit to what I can say?

Communicate and network! It's so vital to make meaningful connections while you're at BCIT, whether they're friends or with marketing professionals.

The faculty at BCIT has supported my own growth, as well as the BCITMAs, and it all has to do with the strong relationship that has been built over the years. I think a lot of students forget that while they’re our teachers, they’re also human.

Also, the BCITMA is a collegiate chapter of the AMA, and the AMA has a lot of resources, programs and events for students to take advantage of and learn from. Words can't even begin to express how much the AMA has supported my growth and development as a marketer. Lastly, put in an honest effort to push yourself outside of your comfort zone! Everyone makes mistakes and it's so easy to beat yourself up.. But how else are you going to grow if you stay stagnant and in one place? :).
